Hello there!

Hello, I'm Kayla Carthel, a Master's level counseling student intern passionate about supporting individuals through life's challenges. I am excited to offer low-cost services at Cooper Counseling and Wellness, where I specialize in working with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, and relationship conflicts. My goal is to provide a compassionate, safe space where you can feel understood, valued, and empowered on your healing journey.

My Story

My background includes a comprehensive internship at the Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center, where I provided individual and group therapy for clients experiencing severe trauma. There, I utilized evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Focused CBT, and incorporated play therapy techniques for younger clients. This experience allowed me to develop personalized treatment plans and foster a deep understanding of how trauma impacts mental health. These skills have been essential in helping me offer empathetic and effective care tailored to each client’s unique needs.

My own experience with a traumatic pregnancy and birth has profoundly shaped my approach to therapy. Navigating this personal challenge gave me firsthand insight into the unique mental health needs during the perinatal period. It fueled my desire to become a beacon of hope and a valuable resource for women facing similar struggles. I understand the importance of having knowledgeable, compassionate support during such a vulnerable time and am dedicated to providing that for my clients.

I am particularly passionate about supporting women of color who are pregnant or recently postpartum. I recognize the unique challenges they may face, including systemic inequities and cultural stigma, and strive to provide culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care. My approach is not only about addressing individual needs but also about empowering and uplifting these women, fostering resilience and well-being for them and their families.

My therapeutic style is eclectic, drawing from various approaches to best support your unique journey. Whether it's utilizing CBT to help reframe traumatic experiences, adopting a Person-Centered approach to create a nonjudgmental and supportive environment, or incorporating Family Systems Theory to consider the broader family dynamics at play, I tailor my interventions to meet your specific needs.

What truly drives my work is my ability to create connected, empathetic relationships with my clients. I believe in building a strong therapeutic relationship based on trust and mutual respect, allowing you to feel safe and supported as you navigate your path to healing.

I am here to walk alongside you, offering guidance, support, and a space where you can be your true self. I look forward to being a part of your journey toward healing and growth.
